My Functional Herbalism Approach

Where traditional herbal wisdom meets personalised functional medicine.

Herbs are not chosen by symptom alone, but in the context of the person, their wider patterns, and the terrain they are moving through.

My approach draws from both traditional herbal knowledge and contemporary research into systems biology, physiology and clinical practice.

An approach shaped by both tradition and systems thinking.

Functional Herbalism is the way I integrate traditional herbal medicine with a functional medicine lens — using herbs not simply to suppress symptoms, but to support the systems and patterns that may be driving them.

I consider:

  • Functional intention (what needs support)

  • Herbal actions (what herbs may help)

  • Person-fit (what is appropriate for you)

How I select herbal support

Herbal medicine is personalised. I consider your symptoms, history, constitution, capacity, medications, sensitivities and the broader patterns we are seeing. It is usually dispensed from my own dispensary with herbal tinctures sourced from UK growers.

A formula may be designed to support things such as:

  • Digestion and gut signalling

  • Nervous system resilience

  • Hormonal balance

  • Immune modulation

  • Metabolic or inflammatory load

Bespoke herbal medicine is only included where appropriate for your case.

The goal is not to match a herb to a symptom, but to think about how herbal support may serve the wider pattern.

Rooted in tradition, informed by research

My approach draws from traditional herbal knowledge, but also from contemporary research into phytochemistry, clinical herbal practice and systems biology.

I’m interested in where old wisdom and emerging evidence strengthen one another.

Why herbs are powerful

Herbal medicine works through relationship, layering and individuality; supporting the body in ways that are often broader and more nuanced than a single pathway approach.

Multi-target support

Herbs often work across networks rather than isolated pathways.

Gentle but meaningful

Support can be layered gently and thoughtfully over time.

Personalised formulations

Formulations can be tailored to the individual, their symptoms and wider patterns.

Herbal medicine sits within a wider personalised approach

It may sit alongside:

  • Nutrition

  • Lifestyle support

  • Functional testing

  • Coaching and nervous system support

This stops herbs feeling isolated.

How Functional Testing Can Add Clarity

Symptoms uncovered during my information gathering and consultation process can offer important clues, but they might not always reveal the full picture.

Functional testing can help uncover patterns related to gut ecology, hormones, metabolism and broader body signalling, allowing us to move beyond assumptions and make more informed decisions about where to focus first.  Rather than adding complexity, the right testing can bring clarity - helping personalise support in a more precise and meaningful way.
