What are the signs of inflammation?

❌ Feeling tired all the time?

❌ Achy joints?

❌ Recurrent infections?

→ These are all signs of inflammation! ←

Chronic inflammation is a long-term battle that can affect us in various diseases and conditions. Unlike acute inflammation, which fades quickly, chronic inflammation persists for weeks, months, or even years. 😳

The signs and symptoms may vary depending on the underlying cause and affected organs, but generally speaking, this is how inflammation presents:

💤 Persistent Fatigue: Chronic inflammation drains our energy, leaving us fatigued and unmotivated. The ongoing inflammatory response, coupled with pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributes to constant tiredness.

😣 Pain and Discomfort: Persistent pain and discomfort are common with inflammation. It can be localised or widespread, varying in intensity, duration, and nature based on the specific condition and affected areas.

🦴 Joint Stiffness: Inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis induce chronic inflammation in joints. This results in stiffness, swelling, and limited range of motion. Morning stiffness lasting over an hour is characteristic of chronic joint inflammation.

🤒 Recurrent Infections: Chronic inflammation weakens the immune system, making us prone to recurring infections. The sustained immune response disrupts normal function, impairing our ability to combat pathogens effectively.

🌡️ Digestive Symptoms: If the the gastrointestinal tract becomes chronically inflamed, digestive issues such as abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, and altered bowel habits can occur. Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or gastritis can cause such inflammation.

🔴 Skin Changes: Persistent inflammation often accompanies chronic skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema. Skin may appear red, dry, or scaly, accompanied by itching, burning, or discomfort. Skin lesions or ulcers may also develop.

😔 Mood Disorders: Chronic inflammation has been linked to mood disorders, including depression and anxiety. Pro-inflammatory cytokines released during inflammation can disrupt neurotransmitter balance and brain function, leading to changes in mood and cognitive processes.
